Cracked Pipe Boots: A Small Part, A Common Leak

Pipe boots are rubber collars around plumbing vents. Sun makes them crack, and water runs down the pipe.

Signs

A stain near a bathroom or kitchen ceiling, or wet insulation around a vent pipe in the attic.

Fix

The old boot is removed and a new one is slid over the pipe and tucked under the shingles above.

Longer-lasting options

Some boots use metal or silicone that holds up better in heat.

Common questions

Is it a big job?
Usually it is a small repair.
Should all boots be replaced at once?
If one has cracked from age, others may be close.
