TPO vs. EPDM vs. PVC: Choosing a Single-Ply Roof
All three are proven. The best fit depends on the building and what lands on the roof.
TPO
White, heat-welded seams, popular for reflective roofs.
EPDM
Rubber, flexible, taped seams, often black.
PVC
Heat-welded, resists grease and many chemicals, often costs more.
What the manufacturer literature says
Carlisle's product pages describe TPO and PVC as heat-welded thermoplastic membranes, and EPDM as a synthetic rubber membrane available in black and white. Each comes in several attachment systems, such as mechanically fastened, adhered, or ballasted.
Compatibility matters more than the label
Specific products have specific rules for primers, adhesives, coatings, and what they can touch. Ask for the product data sheets for the exact membrane proposed.
What changes the recommendation
| If you see | It usually means |
|---|---|
| Grease or chemical exposure on the roof | Ask about PVC or other resistant products |
| Need for heat-welded seams | TPO or PVC |
| Existing EPDM in good shape | Repair or coat-compatible options may fit |

- What warranty, if any, applies, and from whom?
Common questions
